A secure method of attaching railing posts to a deck is to notch the post at the bottom so it fit snugly in the space between the two outer floor joists. Completed composite deck, steps, and railing added to back of house. kit works well for cases where the posts are to be installed outside the rim/band joists. Not cheap, but sturdy and code-compliant. For posts installed internal to the rim/band joists, a series of blocking and technical wood screws does the trick. Again, never notch posts!
